The 2022 Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon are tough competitors, with both full-size SUVs offering three spacious rows of seating and very rugged powertrain options. Choosing between them comes down to the details, and our comparison guide is here to give you exactly that.
Rich Interior Comfort: 2022 Ford Expedition
Inside the Expedition, you can expect major comfort. Ford’s three-row SUV does a great job of delivering long-haul comfort, with cushy seating and a world-class air-conditioning system that offers up to three temperate zones. We’re also big fans of this model’s smooth, quiet ride.
In fact, the 2022 GMC Yukon is also known for its quiet cabin and excellent ride comfort. And its climate system also does a great job of cooling you off (or warming you up) in all three zones. However, the seats aren’t quite as cushy, especially compared to the Expedition. Even the front seats could use more cushioning and extra adjustments.
Technology: 2022 Ford Expedition
The Expedition scores extra points here for two reasons. First, it comes standard with more safety aids, including blind-spot monitoring. Second, you get a more robust standard infotainment setup, with a bigger, 12-inch touchscreen and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
With the Yukon, you get some of the same standard features as the Expedition, if not as many. For instance, the Yukon helps keep you safe with forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist. Both SUVs also give you easy access to smartphone apps, with infotainment systems that include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Both SUVs are available with a wide range of upgrades, depending on which trim model you select. For example, the Yukon offers blind-spot monitoring as an option. And both models improve your infotainment experience with available options like wireless smartphone charging and premium sound systems.
Powertrain Options: 2022 GMC Yukon
The Yukon gives you a little more variety, with three engine options. For both maximum efficiency and tow-friendly torque, check out the turbo-diesel engine. For premium power, on the other hand, you need the 6.2-liter V8 engine.
- 5.3L V8 engine (355 horsepower, 383 lb-ft of torque)
- 6.2L V8 (420 hp, 460 lb-ft)
- Turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder diesel engine (277 hp, 460 lb-ft)
- 10-speed automatic transmission
- Rear-wheel drive
- Optional four-wheel drive
The Expedition has the same turbocharged V6 under every hood, but it offers different levels of power, depending on which trim model you select. Most models come with a standard version of this V6 (375 hp, 470 lb-ft). However, the top-of-the-line Platinum provides a power bump (440 hp, 480 lb-ft). And off-road-ready versions of the Expedition — either the Timberline trim or models with the Stealth Performance package — are even more powerful (440 hp, 510 lb-ft).
- Turbo 3.5L V6
- 10-speed automatic transmission
- Rear-wheel drive
- Optional four-wheel drive
Luxury Options: 2022 Ford Expedition
The Expedition offers a little more luxury than the Yukon, starting with the fact that you can choose from three upscale trim models: the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. All three of these SUVs really wrap you in upscale style, with leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and upgraded tech features (including an available 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and a bigger, 15.5-inch infotainment touchscreen).
While the GMC Yukon can get pretty swanky, it only offers two truly luxurious trim models: the Denali and Denali Ultimate. And while these SUVs give you some of the same features available for the Expedition, like massaging front seats and premium leather upholstery, they lack others. For example, the available Bose sound system only has 18 speakers.
The Best SUV for You
With its powerful performance, upscale options, and tech features you don’t want to do without (especially standard blind-spot monitoring), the 2022 Ford Expedition definitely has the edge. Choose Ford’s full-size SUV for the best blend of family-friendly space and rugged adventure.
