Are you considering the 2022 Ford Transit and Chevy Express? These commercial vans are both available as passenger and cargo models, giving your company the means to transport goods or people. Let’s take a look at which one best suits your unique needs.
Lowest Price: 2022 Chevy Express
If spending less is high on your agenda, the Express can help. Chevy’s full-size commercial van starts at $34,295. The Ford Transit MSRP starts at $42,600. However, it might just give you more for your money, depending on what you’re looking for in a work van.
Strongest Capabilities: 2022 Ford Transit
If you plan on hauling lots of cargo or towing a sizable trailer with your new commercial van, then the Ford Transit is the best option. The Transit offers a wide range of configurations — with multiple roof heights, wheelbases, and powertrain options. Depending on how you configure yours, the Transit can haul up to 4,530 pounds of gear. Max tow rating reach 7,500 pounds.
Even with its oversized V8 engine, the Chevy Express can’t quite compete with the Ford Transit. Max payloads reach 4,280 pounds and max tow ratings reach 7,000 pounds. Also, although the Express offers two wheelbase options, there’s no high-roof configuration available.
Modern Interior: 2022 Ford Transit
In the passenger versions of each van, both the 2022 Ford Transit and Chevy Express are available with a variety of seating configurations, and both seat up to 15 passengers. The Transit and the Express are also available as cargo vans, which seat two people up front and leave the rest of the space available for hauling pay dirt.
But only the Ford Transit offers a crew van, which provides extra seating for more passengers but still leaves lots of space for work gear or cargo boxes.
And without any major redesigns since the early 2000s, the Chevy Express can’t help but look — and feel — dated. By comparison, the Ford Transit has a very modern interior design. Ford’s commercial van also offers more tech features, including wireless Apple CarPlay and safety aids like forward collision mitigation.
Fuel Economy: 2022 Ford Transit
The full-size Chevy express isn’t rated by the EPA, because most full-size commercial vans are exempt from testing. However, with its standard V6 and ancient V8, the Express isn’t exactly delivering a great balance between modern power and efficiency.
Only one Transit model, the T150 Wagon, is rated by the EPA. With rear-wheel drive, this Ford Transit earns up to 17 mpg combined (15 city/19 highway). It’s not exactly the most efficient vehicle on the road, but we’re betting that it’s more efficient than the Express.
Your New Commercial Van
In the end, the Ford Transit is the commercial van that checks every box. Unlike the Chevy Express, which hasn’t been updated in quite a while, the Transit balances work-friendly power with modern fuel economy. And, inside, the Transit also feels modern, with cutting-edge infotainment gear and a contemporary cabin design.
